Hazmat With Station 89 - Route 272 Fulton Twp.
Tuesday, March 19, 2013
Just after 0700 hours on March 19, Containment 27 was requested to assist Lancaster Station 89 with a fuel spill after an auto accident on Route 272 in Fulton Twp. Robert Fulton Fire units were on scene with a leaking overturned tractor trailer loaded with 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel. First arriving units did an outstanding job of damming and diking to prevent the spill from reaching nearby waterways. After the 20 mile response, Containment 27 arrived on scene and was given orders to deploy absorbent booms and pads to assist in containing the spill. The first arriving units had a ditch dug to prevent the diesel from flowing into a nearby stream. With rain water on the ground and a large amount of diesel spilled the first trench was filling up. A second trench was dug closer to the accident scene. Numerous booms and pads were deployed to soak up the diesel before it soaked into the ground. Upon the arrival of Hazmat 2, the 27 crew was assigned to assist their Captain with monitoring and further containing the spill. The area around a nearby stream was checked and crews found no evidence of diesel. As a precaution, two absorbent booms were deployed downstream of the accident scene. The total amount the spilled was estimated at about 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel. No fuel made it to the nearby stream or waterways. After about four hours on scene Containment 27 was released at 1138 hours.
