Hurricane Irene Blows Through - Cochranville

Saturday afternoon, August 27th, 2011, Hurricane Irene started to make it’s way up North. This brought lots of rain and wind. The state of Pennsylvania had been placed under a state of emergency. Due to the serve weather, tornado, tropical storm and flood warnings were alerted in Chester County. Luckily no tornados were citied. Just after midnight, the calls started coming in for our area. At 0004 hours, we were alerted to respond to the 4300 block of Newark Road in Upper Oxford Township for a blown transformer and wires down across the roadway. Engine 27-1 responded, PECO was notified and units returned available at 0040 hours. At 0057 hours, we were alerted to respond to the 2300 block of Glenville Road in West Fallowfield Township for a vehicle into water. Engine 27-1 and QRS 27 responded. Per the police department on scene, all occupants were out of the vehicle that was in the flooded creek. Engine 27-1 and QRS 27 were recalled by Deputy 27. At 0332 hours, we were alerted to the 300 block of Gum Tree Road in Highland Township for telephone poles leaning into the roadway and wires arching. Engine 27-1 responded, PECO was notified and all units returned available by 0358 hours. At 0650 hours, we were alerted for a tree down on the roadway at the intersection of Homeville Road and King Road in West Fallowfield Township. Engine 27-1 responded and returned available at 0709 hours. At 0729 hours, we were alerted to respond back to the 4300 block of Newark Road. Engine 27-1 responded and PECO was re-notified. Engine 27-1 returned available. At 1030 hours, we were alerted to respond to Route 896 and Glenville Road in Upper Oxford Township for wires down. This call ended up being the same as the others. Pennsylvania State Police were on scene and stated that they would handle traffic control around this incident. At 1131 hours, fire police were alerted to respond to the 4300 block of Newark Road incident to assist with traffic control. QRS 27 responded. Pennsylvania State Police on scene said it was not necessary, so the QRS returned available. At 1540 hours, we were alerted once again to respond to the 4300 block of Newark Road. Engine 27-1 responded and the wires were still down across the roadway and grass causing small brush fires. We were still unable to extinguish the fire due to no response from PECO.
